The Toffees Under-18 ace has scored close to 50 goals this season.
Everton Under-23 manager David Unsworth has issued a positive update about a Toffees youngster who has been nothing short of sensational this season.
Ellis Simms, an 18-year-old striker, has been prolific this term for the club’s youth teams – although statistics at that level are somewhat inconsistent, EFC Statto had him down as having netted 41 goals in 33 appearances across the various age groups as of 23 March.
Since that tally, Everton lost 1-0 to Liverpool, but then Simms grabbed six goals in the ensuing three games – one in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle, four in the 6-0 thrashing of Sunderland, and one in the end-of-season 5-4 win at Manchester United (Soccerway), putting him on 47 for the season.
At the end of March, The Sun had reported that the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen were keeping tabs on him and, worryingly, said he had not yet penned a professional contract, with his scholarship expiring at the end of the season.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo on Wednesday after winning the Premier League Cup, however, Unsworth said: “There’s a number of Under-18 players in my thoughts [for the new season]. Joe Anderson, Ellis Simms and Einar Iversen have got contracts and they will step into the Under-23 squad next year.”
Needless to say, news of Simms’ contract update have gone down well amongst a number of Everton fans on Twitter, who sincerely hope he can be their very own Michael Owen:
As always ! And people writing nonsense like BVB were getting him !
Really looking forward to seeing this kid develop – hope he’s becomes our Michael Owen – without being a boring bastard
That’s good news. I was worried about this. Excellent!
We’re about due for another prodigious goalscoring talent from our Academy.
